“Mentalizing God”
5:00 - 6:30pm
Dr. Allen says, “Karen Armstrong asserts that God is a product of the human imagination and that God often is imbued with human characteristics. Mentalizing entails attributing mental states to others as well as awareness of mental states in oneself; hence relating to God (e.g., through prayer) entails mentalizing. This presentation (1) considers relatedness to God from the perspective of attachment research; (2) examines the links between human attachments and different ways of mentalizing God; and (3) advocates a mentalizing stance toward God as optimal for therapists with diverse beliefs in working with patients with diverse beliefs.”
Dr. Allen is senior staff psychologist at the Menninger Clinic in Houston. He is an expert in treating trauma-related disorders and depression, a prolific writer, and international lecturer. Along with Dr. Peter Fonagy, Allen has helped introduce the concept of Mentalization in Psychotherapy.
