SACRED MOMENTS IN MEDICINE

Tue, 04/23/2013 - 5:30pm

Madeleine L'Engle wrote, “Stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving.” It is my hope that the stories that make up this evening’s celebration of sacred moments in medicine will make listeners more alive, more human, more courageous, and more loving. I hope that they will initiate a meditation on the special stories in your own lives and that you will walk away from this evening with a sense of the power that medicine has not only to impact bodies, but also to impact souls and spirits.

Tonight is not about a single specialty, disease, philosophy, or technique in healthcare. We will not hear the theories of an academic or the findings of a researcher. Rather, we will witness four reflections on a side of healthcare that is oftentimes ineffable for those who experience it and inaccessible to those who disregard it. These stories take place at the intersection of compassion and vulnerability and for me they inspire consideration of what takes place under the surface of medical encounters.

L’Engle’s most famous stories have inspired spiritual reflection in millions of young adults. As you listen, I invite you to reflect on and plunge into the unfathomably deep place where your own special, spiritual, sacred stories dwell.
