John K. Graham, M.D., D.Min - President/CEO

John K Graham, M.D.President and C.E.O. of the Institute Dr. John K. Graham is both a physician and a priest. He received his M.D. Degree from Tulane Medical School in New Orleans and is board-certified in two medical specialties - otolaryngology and plastic & reconstructive surgery. John was in the private practice of medicine in Shreveport, LA for twenty years and was founder of the Plastic Surgery Center there.

Kenneth Pargament, Ph.D. - ISH's Distinguished Scholar

Dr. Pargament is professor of clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Maryland and interned in clinical psychology at Rutgers Medical School.  His research focuses on the roles of religion in coping with trauma. Since fall of 2011 he has served as the ISH Visiting Distinguished Scholar, giving lectures all across the city and collaborating on mulitple research projects with others in the Medical Center.

Pargament is author of two major textbooks:  Spirituality Integrated Psychotherapy: Understanding and Addressing the Sacred (New York: Guilford Press, 2007) and The Psychology of Religion and Coping.  (New York:  Guildford Press, 1997).  The latter text is a highly cited

Lex Gillan - Director, Center for Professional Renewal

Lex GillanLex Gillan has been a practitioner of yoga and meditation for nearly 40 years. He has studied with world-class teachers including Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Ram Dass, Stephen Levine, Father Thomas Keating, Andy Gold and James Ezelle, M.D. since the 1960s. Lex has been a full-time instructor since 1974 when he founded The Yoga Institute in Houston, Texas, one of the oldest yoga studio businesses in the country.

Jerri Doctor – Manager of Operations

Jerri DoctorJerri Doctor has spent her professional career working in medical and religious non-profit organizations. She is Manager of Operations at the Institute for Religion and Health. Jerri organizes conferences, retreats, and board meetings and handles all decision making operations at the Institute. She joined the staff in July 2003.

Stuart Nelson - Project Manager

Stuart is currently developing tools for healthcare professionals to use that will allow them to better understand religion and spirituality as they interface with their respective practices. After graduating from Rice University in 2011 with degrees in Cogntive Science, Psychology, and Religious Studies, he completed an M.A. in Religious Studies at University of California, Santa Barbara. During his graduate studies, Stuart collaborated with Dr.

Rev. Dr. Afzaal Firdous

The Rev. Dr. Afzaal Firdous, Ph.D. was born in Pakistan and raised in a Christian family with Muslim and Hindu grandparents.  He came to the United States 17 years ago.   In 2002, he received a Master of Divinity degree from SMU in Dallas and in 2008 received a Ph.D. in World Religions from Louisiana Baptist University.   He was ordained in the United Methodist Church and has served as a pastor in several East Texas towns.   He moved to Houston in 2010 and, in 2012, completed an eighteen month Chaplaincy Training program at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston.   

 

Cathy Moore - Executive Director

Cathy is the first Executive Director for the Institute for Spirituality and Health, and joined the staff in 2013. Previously, she served as Senior Vice President at Interfaith CarePartners®.   Cathy is responsible for overall management of ISH’s business, fundraising, and financial operations.
